This is my second bike (first a mountain bike) purchased from Halter’s. Although I started looking at shops closer to home (45 min ride to Halters), their combination of customer service, knowledge and pricing are unbeatable (thanks J) are what brought me back yet again. I would highly recommend this shop to anybody who is looking for a quality bike, a wide selection to choose from and expert guidance to ensure you are making the right choice.
Thank You J, Don and Cody
I've had both good and bad experiences at this shop and my overall sentiment is that they're alright. It's really a shame because the store is so close to my house and the actual store itself is very nice.
I have also had bikes serviced at Halter’s and the mechanics there have always been able to diagnose and fix whatever problem I have with my bikes. I ride road, cyclocross and mountain bikes and typically log a few thousand miles a year, so as a person that visits a lot of bike shops I can tell you that Halter’s has the most helpful knowledgeable staff of any bike shop around. Halter’s also has the largest inventory, whether you are looking for bikes, bike parts, wheels, clothing or accessories.
In addition, Halter’s gives back to the community. Jason is one of the sponsors for the local NICA league (Mountain Bike Racing for student athletes) and on his days off, you can find him spending countless hours building and maintaining trails over at 6 mile for others to use.
Went in to talk to Jay at Halter's about a new bike after having back surgery. Had a particular bike in mind when I got to the shop, however they stopped dealing with the particular brand I was looking at. Jay made a suggestion of another company that I had not considered. At first I wasn't interested, but he insisted I at least take it for a test ride...and I am glad he did! Bike rode great! Then came the discussion of fit...being a long time cyclist I felt that I could handle this myself. But after consideration of my back surgery I decided to let Jay take a shot at my setup. Long story short, Jay got me into a better position on the bike than I would have thought possible after my surgery.
I can’t say enough positive things about Jason and the crew at Halter’s. Between the initial visit, choosing a bike and the fitting process, they spent close to 5 hours with me. Through it all, they shared their expert knowledge, answered all the questions I had and directed me to a bike they felt best met my needs and budget. I am happy to say, I purchased a Cannondale road bike that has exceeded my expectations.
The bad: One older staff member is very rude and alienating to the customers. I had called in to purchase a new tire and was told on the phone it would be $52.99. The guy on the phone even said they'd mount it for free. A few days later I go to pick up the tire and have my wheel trued at the same time. This older staff member rings me up for $63, $10 more than the agreed upon price on the phone. When I challenged him on the price he immediately caved and gave me the $52.99, however, he said that he wouldn't mount the tire for free anymore. When I said I would take care of it myself, he gave me a look of disgust and walked away from me in a huff. I would have normally just left, but I also wanted to get my wheel trued. This staff member ignored me and went to sell another customer a new bike. Eventually he finished and realized that I was still there. He took my wheel and loudly whispered to a co worker about how “we got a cheap one here”. Ultimately, he tried truing the wheel, but either did not know what he was doing or didn't want to do a good job because the wheel was still wobbling as bad as when I brought it in. Not a good service at all, if they can't true wheels, how can they do other services?
Always perfect. I've read the last review and don't know the person or their experience. I can however say that it's just not the one I have or have ever had at Halters. We've purchased 7 bikes from the store now and always have been treated with courtesy, friendliness and respect. They've service all my bikes (even one I didn't buy there - though it was not a Department Store Bike). They're a local bike store, a local business who have a right to choose what they can safely and effectively work on. They've always kept my and my childrens safety and enjoyment at the top of their priority list.
I would also highly recommend taking advantage of the bike fitting process. Don did a fantastic job making adjusting to the bike to optimizing my ride. He has a vast knowledge of the fitting process and is passionate about making the adjustments need to have a more successful ride. I never knew what I missing out on after riding so many miles on a road bike that did not properly fit me (or one might say didn't fit my body at all).
Overall, I really can’t say enough good things about this bike shop. If you are looking for a bike shop with great products and service, then you should look no further.
I have been looking through some of these reviews and I really have a hard time believing some of the negative ones. My experience at Halter’s Cycles has been nothing short of outstanding. I started going to Halter’s back in 2011 when they were still located in South Brunswick. I was experiencing pain while riding due to the original fit on my old Trek bike. I made an appointment for a fit with Jason and I have been a loyal customer ever since. Over the years I have purchased 4 bikes from Halters and have had numerous fits from both Jason and Don. As a side note, I have broken my knee twice in the past, so I am probably not the easiest person to fit, however both Jason and Don have spent many hours with me over the years and are the best bike fitters I know of. They have helped me identify and resolve many issues and I always leave there feeling much more comfortable on the bike.
The good: Some of the staff are very friendly and helpful. One time I had to get some new shifter housing and cables for my MTB. A younger guy was there and got me squared away with housing cut from bulk, ferrules, and a shifter cable in 5 minutes. Another positive experience I had was with my headset clicking. The tech immediately diagnosed a cracked head set cap and installed a new one. Both of these guys were amazing to deal with, no problems at all.
TL;DR: I’ve had good experiences with the younger guys. They are also cool to talk to about biking and have a passion for the sport. The older staff member I dealt with took it personal when I rightfully called him out on an overpriced item we had previously agreed upon. I would not trust the service at this shop because the wheel true I got is worse than what I could get mounting the wheel to my frame and spinning it. I will not buy a new bike from this place or use its services ever again. I give it 2 stars because some of the guys are cool.
Update as of 10/1/17: I took my bike to Jungle Habitat and a nipple on my rear wheel snapped (3 easy rides before at 6 mile) . Usually this is caused by some wheel tension problems. My wheel was slightly wobbly when I brought it in so I wouldn't expect the tension to be very inconsistent in the spokes after the service. With that said, I can't blame the shop definitively for this, but the wheel worked perfectly for 3 years straight from trail riding to downhill runs before this.
Thanks to everyone at the shop!
Overall have to say that my purchase/fit experience exceeded my expectations! The added plus to me is that Halter's is also deeply involved in advocacy work for the cycling community. As a result I will continue to drive the hour and a half from my home to shop at Halter's!
