Carrier clinic is one of the best facilities I’ve been to yet. My son stayed for 8 days and I have no complaints.
This place is unique in a sense that it allows its clients ground privileges, smoke brakes and horticulture therapy. Living quarter are airy and spacious unlike dungeons you see in other places. Other that that it is a behavioral hospital and should be treated as such.
My child was there. They were much more proactive than St Clares. Carrier considered her full mental health history, not just her current state of mind. Her progress was closely monitored and they kept me informed. Carrier seemed more concerned about her future and what her next steps should be to improve her well being.
Stayed for four days in the adolescent unit. Exterior lovely, interior a bit dumpy but who cares? Didn't get on medication but I had a decent experience getting away from my life and calming down from suicidal urges.
I was staying in the Adolescent Unit for short term (which is how long Carrier Clinic should be keeping you or your child) The food there was not healthy. I saw one girl walk in completely skinny and leave within a week looking chubby. The rooms are okay, not the best but okay. However, the bathrooms in the rooms are absolutely disgusting. There is gunk all around the bottom corners, bring some flip flops of some sort for the shower. The techs are horrendous, I first entered with no blanket for myself, It took them 3 days to finally listen to me and bring me one. The techs or supervisors need to stay on top of the adolescent patients, the girls in the unit are bully's. They talk behind you or your child's back, even when discharged. Some even cut you off when your speaking telling you to stop talking because you are "irrelevant." Their groups are meaningless, they are fun but don't improve your problems. Instead of talking about your feelings, problems, etc. they play games, music, and make you fill out worksheets that they tell you to keep or throw out later on. They don't even think to collect it so they know your state of mind and try to improve it. Go somewhere cleaner, nicer, and somewhere that they'll help you or your child.
You cannot be called or visited by anyone that aren't your parents, which is messed up. The fellow patients are nice and made the experience tolerable, along with the techs.
The observing staff/mental health technicians ('techs') are kind and funny, and make good conversation. There is one nurse per wing, some are nice, some listen well, and some seem so busy with everything that they never get to you. There is one medical doctor for EVERYONE. The psychiatrists are pretty good at listening and understanding. If you're losing your shit then you have to go to the quiet area, a single room. So don't lose your shit, be calm.
Groups are held 3-4 times a day. You can choose to leave if it bores you but there are enjoyable ones like art and music making, and there are also ones about coping skills. There is a lot of down time, bring books. They have a library.
